Church of Saint John the Baptist in Axos
(1 Vote)

The church of Saint John the Baptist (Agios Ioannis Prodromos) is located in Axos cemetery, north of the hill of Ancient Axos. It is one of the many Byzantine churches of Axos, which flourished from the Greco-Roman era to the late Byzantine years. The temple is built on the ruins of an Early Christian Basilica, from which still part of the semicircular arch of the sanctuary and the mosaic floor around and inside the temple are still visible.

The interior preserves 14th-century frescoes from which the scenes of the life of Saint John the Baptist stand out. Also special are the representations with the hand of the god holding the souls, as well as the many scenes with sinners in the Second Coming on the west wall.
