Iraklion (Heraklion or Herakleion) is the largest urban centre in Crete, the capital of the region and the economic centre of the island. Hania (or Chania) is the second biggest town in Crete and is well known for its scenic old town and harbor. Rethymnon is built between the two other large cities of Crete. The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, fountains etc. Agios Nikólaos is the capital of the Lassithi province of Crete and is built around a picturesque lake on the north-western side of the Mirabello bay.

Church of Agia Paraskevi at Pigouniana

Inside Margaritsano gorge we meet the Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi, which can be accessed from Pigouniana via a dirt track. This is a small single-nave barrel-vaulted temple with its interior adorned by frescoes of the Venetian era.

Historical and Folklore Museum Kritsotopoula

The Historical and Folklore museum of Kritsotopoula's house is located in the village of Kritsa, at Mirabelo, in the original house of Rodanthi (Kritsotopoula), reviving her amazing story. The folklore exhibition includes objects from the everyday life.

The Roman Naumachia of Ierapetra

One of the highlights of ancient Ierapetra was the Naumachia (naval battle), a maritime theater where bloody battles were performed by prisoners and slaves of the Roman Empire. This was the transfer of arenas to the marine environment. The Naumachia was inspired by Julius Caesar in 46 BC.

Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Halepa

The temple of Saint Maria Magdalene is located in Chalepa, the noble district of Chania that flourished in the 19th century, when Eleftherios Venizelos who lived here emerged as the most important leader of modern Greece.

Folklore Museum of Neapolis

The Folklore and Historical Museum of Neapolis is housed since 2016 in the building of the First Gymnasium of Neapolis and is managed by the Cultural Folklore Society of Ano Mirabello. Its exhibition is composed of relics of the cultural tradition from the province of Mirabello that depict the everyday life after the 19th century.

Church of Saint Catherine in Fortezza

The small church of Saint Catherine (Agia Ekaterini) is a modern church located in the fort of Fortezza in Rethymnon. It was built in the 19th century with materials from the fortress very close to the site of the Ibrahim Khan Mosque. The belfry was added in 1985.
