In the verdant area of Malathre on the outskirts of the village Mourne and near the starting point of the Frati gorge we meet the ruins of an imposing temple. The church is reminiscent of the main churches in the dioceses and is the largest of the time in the entire province of Agios Vasilios.
The imposing temple probably belonged to a prosperous monastery believed to have been dedicated to Saint George (Agios Georgios). According to oral tradition, the monastery was destroyed by the Turks and its monks took refuge in the present-day monastery of Preveli, which was then a dependency of Malathre. It also had 101 doors and windows and a golden gate, under which a treasure is still buried.
In a few places, frescoes are preserved, such as those of Saint George. The temple was cruciform with a dome, which extended to the west. Gerola mentioned the frescoes of Saints Constantine and Helen, equestrian saints, the Deesis, punishments of the sinners (in the arch), the martyrdom of Saint George, Birth, Baptism, Ascension, Evangelism, Hierarchs, but they all have gone today.
