Church of Holy Trinity in Ligortynos
(1 Vote)

The ruined church of the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) is located within the boundaries of the settlement of Ligortynos in the province of Monofatsi. Its use is placed from the post-Byzantine period to the Venetian period, and more specifically between the 11th and 15th centuries, with most findings dating to the 12th and 13th centuries.

The dome in the west was supported by two columns, while in the east dome rested on the sanctuary. From the temple, the north wall is mainly preserved, while scattered throughout the area there are architectural parts from earlier periods, such as a Roman capital and an Ionic column.

To the east of the temple, 9 box-shaped tombs have been identified, with one tomb having found to contain 27 skulls. Bronze coins of the Venetian period were also found in the burials. An impressive vaulted well is also preserved on the outside, where the spring water was collected and watered Ligortynos in the past.

The "curse" of Ligortynos

Since the middle of the 20th century, the temple has been associated with a series of dramatic events, with dozens of young men dying in accidents (traffic accidents, drowning, etc.). Initially it was thought that the reason for the accidents was the demolition of the temple of Michael the Archangel, which was demolished to make way for a square. The village priest saw a vision that said “You had a church and you ruined it. If you don't rebuild it, there won't be a man left in the village!'. Believing that the vision referred to Michael the Archangel, money was raised and the church was rebuilt in 1992. However, the death toll did not stop and it was then assumed that the vision referred to the church of the Holy Trinity. Since then, efforts have been made to restore the temple.
