The almost deserted village of Metaxochori in the province of Viannos and the current Municipality of Ierapetra takes its name after Meletios Metaxakis, who served as Ecumenical Patriarch in the years 1921-1923 and Patriarch of Alexandria (1926-1935) and was born here. The previous name of the village was Parsas. The village with this rich religious tradition hosts many churches. Among them are the Byzantine church of Saint George and the half-ruined church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary.
