Kalamokanias is located 57km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 22km east of Ierapetra, at the west side of Makrigialos settlement. It is located on the west side of the hill Katovigli that rises behind the harbor area. It takes its name after the Greek name of kalamokanias, the migratory bird stilt (Himantopus himantopus) that has red legs and body reminding of a miniature stork and stops in the local streams.
The beach is very quiet and has coarse black sand that does not stick to the body. It is not verty well organized, but there are some tamarisk trees that provide shade and a couple of taverns and rooms to let. Here you will meet mostly locals enjoying the sea, away from the tourist beach of Makrigialos.
To get here from Ierapetra, 100m before entering Makrigialos, turn right and head towards the sea. Moreover, there is a coastal road connecting the beach with the local harbor.
