The cave Chonos at Sitanos is a sinkhole in the wider Sitanos area, which hosts the largest number of caves in the UNESCO Geopark of Sitia. Indeed its name is frequently used in the caves of Crete, as chonos means a pothole in the Cretan dialect.
The cave of Chonos has clear and solid walls and its total length exceeds 400m, while the explored depth reaches 94m. Chonos has small descents where one can descend with attention, but 3 steep wells require the use of technical equipment and caving experience to overcome.
