Just above the east cliffs of Agiofarago beach there is a hidden sea lake - cave, called Vourvoulitis. It is a sinkhole communicating with the open sea by underground passages. The water is brackish, as there is fresh water coming from the bottom of the pond.
Approaching Vourvoulitis is possible. One can climb for about 10 minutes from the west end of Agiofarago beach (sneakers are required) till meeting the sinkhole of Vourvoulitis. Although initially looking impossible, one can approach and swim in the lake, but it’s quite dangerous as the sides are steep.
Vourvoulitis is one of the most impressive holes is Crete which end up in the sea. A few meters to the east and near the village Kali Limenes there is still quite a similar sinkhole called Little Vourvoulitis.
