Vamos is the current capital of Apokoronas Province in Chania Prefecture. There was a well-known tower, the Tower of Vamos. The Ottoman Empire, after the revolution of 1866, founded a new prefecture that consisted of the current provinces of Apokoronas, Sfakia and Agios Vasilios. This prefecture was called Sfakia Prefecture and its capital was Vamos.
Therefore, the first commander of the Prefecture, Savvas Pasha, apart from the headquarters of the new prefecture (located at the current position of the Secondary School of Vamos), built a defensive tower. This does not belong to the series of the Towers we call Koules, as it was built so as to militarily strengthen the new capital of Sfakia. The rebels burnt the tower in May 1896 as revenge for the preceding massacre in Chania city (by the Turks).
During the battle of Vamos, the rebels beat the Turks and forced them away. 200 Turks were killed, with the famous Bandris Efendis among them. The revenging mania of the Greeks was burnt out on everything Turkish, with this tower included.
