The picturesque Venerato village, located 20km from Heraklion, was in the 16th-century the resort of the Venetian lords. It was so pleasant for them stay here, that they compared the village to Venice.
Here were built, as expected, several mansions for the Venetian nobles who lived in Venerato. Today, several of these buildings are still surviving. It is believed that these chateaus were occasionally used as defensive towers.
