Houdetsi
The Musical Workshop Labyrinth (Lavirinthos) was founded in 1982 by Ross Daly and since 2002 it is housed in a scenic old building in Houdetsi village, province Pediada.
The purpose of the Musical Workshop Labyrinth is the collection, preservation and promotion of traditional musical instruments from around the world. The exhibit is evidence of social, historical and cultural expressions of each country through music. It is the only museum of its kind in Greece and includes rich collections that illustrate the most representative traditional music, from antiquity to the present.
In the meanwhile, the Musical Workshop Labyrinth is a vibrant center of research and teaching instruments of traditional music around the world and aims to preserve the world music tradition. It fosters musical skills and helps promoting young artists.
As a part of this effort, concerts and seminars on musical instruments from around the world are organized to which musicians and students from any corner of the world attend. Especially the annual Festival of Houdetsi, organized by the workshop is one of the most popular musical events in Crete.
It is also worth noting that Labyrinth houses a properly equipped workshop for the construction and maintenance of musical instruments, especially for preserving the instruments of the museum.
