Therisso is a small picturesque village located around 15km south of Chania city that can be accessed through the gorge of Eleftherios Venizelos. The Museum of National Resistance in Therisso of 1941-1945 is located at the entrance of Therisso and is the second museum of the village, as one can also visit the Historical Museum of Therisso.
The inauguration of the museum took place in May 2003. The collection includes weapons and heirlooms, a printing press and the typewriter of the resistance, many military objects of the German Occupation (helmets, bayonets, bullets, grenades, etc.), the file of the German Gestapo at Chania, manuscripts, maps with the major battles that took place in Crete during the German occupation and many photographs of the guerillas of the Resistance against the German occupiers.
The museum is very active and organizes workshops, speeches, lectures, guided tours of the site, anniversary memorial celebrations, book publications, exhibitions and installation of commemorative plaques in places, where battles took place.
