Shelter Kallergis
(19 votes)

The shelter Kallergis is located in the White Mountains at an altitude of 1680m, 5km (1:30 hour walk along a dirt road) east of the Plateau Omalos and is the most popular and well-organized shelter of Crete. It is built on a amazing site with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and the sea of both North and South Crete. The place is very important because from here one can continue climbing to the peaks Psari, Mavri and Melidaou or to cross the alpine desert of the White Mountains by walking to the other shelter of Svourichti.

The shelter was built in 1970, can accommodate 50 people and is open daily from April to October and after arrangement for the rest of the year. The Mountaineering Club of Chania (eoshanion.gr) is responsible for its operation. The shelter is heated by stoves and a fireplace, electrified by generator, watered by a reservoir while there are toilets inside and outside the shelter. There is offered food and there is the shelter keeper.
