There is no place in Crete with so many springs with that quantity of water like the wider area of Georgioupolis at Province Apokoronas. Water comes from Lefka Ori Range (White Mountains) and the springs form wide rivers (for Cretan standards) very close to the seashore, therefore water is brackish. The only freshwater river is that originating from Lake Kournas. The rivers are Perastikos, Almiros and Boutakas. Especially Perastikos has a large quantity of water although it is formed very close to the shore. Along its short, 50m long course, it forms a very important wetland that hosts several bird species. Near its source, there is a bridge connecting both sides of the beach.
