Pervolia, Misiria and Platanias (or Platanes) are three consecutive suburbs of Rethymnon, located 3-5km west of the city, respectively. They were separate settlements, which have been incorporated into the urban region of Rethymnon, due to the residential development.
In front of the suburbs stretches a long sandy beach, which is an extension of long beachfront of Rethymnon bay that starts near the harbor of Rethymno and extends to the east for 13km till Skaleta. It is very well organized, with a plethora of choices for food, drink and accommodation. Like in all parts of the vast beachfront, sea turtle Caretta caretta lays its eggs on the sandy beach. The turtles are protected by international law and Rethymno Gulf is one of the three most important places for the species in Greece, bearing more than 400 nests every year.
