Pervolia, Missiria and Platanias (or Platanes) are three consecutive suburbs of Rethymnon, located 3-5km west of the city, respectively. They were separate settlements, which have been incorporated into the urban region of Rethymnon, due to the residential development of the last century.
In front of the suburbs stretches a long sandy beach, which is an extension of long beachfront of Rethymnon Bay that starts near the harbor of Rethymno and extends to the east for 13km till Skaleta. It is very well organized, with a plethora of choices for food, drink and accommodation. Like in all parts of the long beachfront, loggerhead sea turtle lays it eggs here. The turtles are protected by the Greek State and Rethymno Bay is one of the three most important places for the species in Greece, with more than 400 nests every year.
