Argyroupoli is a small town in the province of Rethymno, built in a beautiful location at an altitude of 260 meters above the valley of the river Mouselas. The settlement has been characterized as traditional, as it preserves many of the architectural elements of the rich past.

Argyroupoli is built on the site of the ancient city Lappa. Scattered monuments from the Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian periods indicate the strategic importance of the city that flourished in the depths of the centuries.

It is worth walking in the narrow alleys of the village, to see the traces of the mosaic floors, the Byzantine frescoed churches, and the Venetian mansions. You can also visit the nearby necropolis of ancient Lappa with the carved Greco-Roman tombs, the monumental plane tree, and the temple of Pente Parthenes.

However, the place that accepts the most visitors is the famous Springs of Argyroupoli, which are formed in a green setting a few meters below the village. The water comes out of the cave of Agia Dynami and after passing the old watermills that once ground the grain, they end up in the riverbed of the river Mouselas. The watermills today have been turned into taverns that offer traditional food.

Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas and its surroundings constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece. Kournas is one of the very few areas of Crete where plenty of fresh water is stored throughout the year. For this reason, it is protected under the Natura 2000 program.

Ancient Lappa

Ancient Lappa was built near the current town of Argyroupolis, located 27km south of Rethymno. The area is now famous for its springs with waterfalls, its old mills and the lush green landscape that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Kollita Gorges, i.e. Twin Ravines are located nearby the picturesque village Argyroupolis, about 22km southwest of Rethymnon city. They are named so, as they consist of two parallel canyons that end near Kato Poros settlement and is part of the E4 trail. The first canyon on the east is called Moudriano Gorge, while the west gorge is Kato Poros Gorge of Vilandredo Gorge, mostly known as the main Kollita Gorge.

Profitis Ilias Monastery at Roustika

The Monastery of Prophet Elijah (Profitis Elias) is built above a hill with panoramic views, 20km south of Rethymno, next to Roustika village. It is a relatively unknown monastery throughout Crete, although it was founded in the Venetian Era and belongs to the most historic convents on the island.

Trail Kallikratis - Asi Gonia - Argyroupolis

This section of the E4 European path is the last running on the east White Mountains and is entirely on a paved road. The road connecting Kallikratis village to Asi Gonia then heads to Argiroupolis. The views of the surrounding mountains and valleys and the lush green area of Argiroupolis Springs are the highlights of this route. As the path runs along a paved road, it is suggested that you visit it by car.

Pente Parthenes Plane tree

This plane tree is located in the Roman cemetery of Ancient Lappa and below the chapel of Five Virgins. Below it there is a cool spring with five taps, symbolizing the Five Virgins that were killed here by the Turks. This plane tree has been declared as a natural monument.

Cave of Agia Dynami at Argyroupolis

The cavernous temple of Agia Dynami (Holy Force) is located in Argiroupolis. Within this small chapel there is a huge spring of Holy Force that supplies almost entire Rethymno province with water. Inside the temple there was an impressive mosaic of Christ, which has been now replaced with a simple icon as the initial has been moved to the museum of Rethymnon.
