The olive tree of Mathena has been declared as monumental by the Association of Cretan Olive Municipalities as a natural monument due to shape and relief trunk, forming a cave with its adjacent rock.
It is located in Lastros village and is variety of mastoid, grafted on a rootstock of a wild olive tree. The tree is located at the middle of the triangle formed by three churches, therefore it has been linked to religious traditions. The locals say that the faithful Christians can see saints on its leafs and cut branches.
