The church of Agia Irini in the settlement Melisses in the valley of Avgos, in the region of Kavousi in province Ierapetra, is dated to the 14th century and bears frescoes of 1410-1411. The temple is believed to have been a cathedral of a small female convent (nunnery), but no other buildings are preserved today.
The iconographic program includes seven scenes from the Christological cycle in the eastern part of the arch (Evangelism, Birth, Burial, Myrrhs and Descent to Hell). Particularly, one should mention the rare scene of the Second Coming of the Lord, arriving "in clouds" in the center of the eastern part of the arch, depicting God in throne, and around him the symbols of the Evangelists, angels with the symbols of Passion, and on each side the apostles - judges.
