The wild and inaccessible canyon of Mesosfini is located 55km south of Heraklion city, in an isolated area of the range Asterousia, west of the seaside village of Tris Ekklissies. It is a technical gorge, meaning that there are waterfalls and descending it requires special equipment for canyoning and special training. Its entrance is located at a height of 450m, near the village Mournia, while at its exit, the majestic beach of Voidomatis is formed, which can be accessed via a dirt track from Tris Ekklisies.
The canyon is very narrow in the beginning and then opens. The vertical descents are very high, forming waterfalls in the winter and full of boulders that make it inaccessible. In fact, Mesosfini Gorge is the only one in Crete with two very high descents of almost 90m. Thus, Mesosfini is a paradise for experienced climbers and canyoners, who have been exploring it for many years.
