Vorno Gorge (Ethiano)
(4 votes)

The imposing Gorge Ethiano, officially known as Vorno or Havgas, is located in the south Heraklion prefecture, and is the longest canyon in the north side of Asterousia Range. It starts from the village Ethia and, after tearing Asterousia northwards, it empties its water in the tributary of Anapodaris river, Livaditis, in the fertile plain of Messara, between the villages Rotasi and Mesochorio.

Ethiano Gorge is a very wild canyon that requires canyoning equipment in order to traverse it, due to steep descents. The bed of the gorge is generally dry, like most canyons in Asterousia, but has water after long rainfalls. The highest descent (rappel) is 65m high, thus making the Ethiano gorge particularly appealing to canyoners. If you are not fond of canyoning and want to meet the canyon, you can walk along the west walls of it, by starting from Ethia.
