Agia Roumeli

Agia Roumeli Koules
(4 votes)

At the west side of the exit of Samaria Gorge, above the beach of Agia Roumeli, the Ottomans built the defensive tower (koules) of Agia Roumeli to suppress the rebels hiding in the gorge. This Koules is in quite good condition, compared to the rest towers in the Sfakia area. The fort is built in three levels at position Episkopos, at a place with intense incline, and was rectangular with two semicircular towers in the sides. In higher altitude, the hikers can reach the small koule of Agia Roumeli.

There were some more towers in wider area of Agia Roumeli (at position Skotini, Aggelokambos and Sideris)
