The forest village of Agios Ioannis at Sfakia province is the starting point of one of the most beautiful and best marked trails of Chania prefecture, the trail of Kormokopos. The word Kormokopos means place "where trees are cut", due to the dense forest of the area.
The path to Kormokopos has a very distinct starting point at the west edge of the village. It runs at an uphill route through the dense forest for about an hour until you reach the highest point of the route. There the horizon “opens” and we overlook the entire southern coastline of western Sfakia and the South Cretan Sea. In front of us we see a steep cliff on the opposite side and it is very easy to locate a fairly open and spacious oblong cave, the cave of Kormokopos, where the foot trail actually ends.
