Turkish Towers

Loutro

Koules of Loutro
(4 votes)

Apart from the well-known Turkish forts (koules) of Askifou, several more towers had been built in the current province of Sfakia with the aim of suppressing the respective revolutionaries and immobilizing the Sfakians. In Loutro there are still the ruins of the Turkish tower, koule, which once dominated the current settlement, as it was the largest koule in the area. It was built in 1868 with large dimensions, two eleveted tower positions to the east and to the west and spacious for the guards. The building has a rectangular shape and some of its walls survive. Externally, a large cistern covered the water supply needs of the fort, while the remnants of a small windmill are still visible nearby.

The koules of Loutro was supported by the Fort of Kastella at Loutro port, the Tower of Agia Ekaterini at Anopolis, the fort of Timios Stavros and the fort of Agios Ioannis.
