Kapetaniana village is located on the site of the former Monastery of the “Lord Have Mercy”, one of the most important centers in Crete for monasticism where arts and culture flourished. During the Ottoman Era the monastery was abandoned and the place transformed to the settlement of Kapetaniana.
From the monastery still survives the church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) with very important frescoes of the school of Constantinople (1402), which contributed to the creation of the Cretan Renaissance in Arts. Kapetaniana wider area hosts several very interesting Byzantine churches.
