Pantanassa monastery (Panagia Pantanassa) is built atop a pine covered hill beside the sea at an altitude of 30m, about 14km west of Heraklion. It is a relatively new female monastery dedicated to the Nativity of Mary (celebr. on September 8).
Pantanassa was initially founded to carry out charity work, like the monastery of Kalyviani near Mires. However, its founder, Bishop Nikolaos Xenos, died and he did not manage to fulfil his grandiose dreams and fond orphanage, nursing home, kindergarten, nursery, etc.
Timeline

- 1984: Nikolaos Xenos dies and his plans stop. The monastery still operates as a convent.
