To the west of the prefecture of Chania and 20 kilometers away from the city of Chania, we meet the estuary of Tavronitis, a river famous for the metal bridge that was bombed during the Battle of Crete. Tavronitis with Platanias are the two largest rivers in the western part of Chania. At its exit to the sea, the river forms a delta which is a very important wetland. The area hosts a small lake as the riverbed widens considerably. The delta is surrounded by impressive reeds and other aquatic plants, being an ideal shelter for many birds, insects and amphibians. In winter months, when the river has much water, the entire area of Tavronitis estuary has beautiful colors and the beach with the large pebbles is completely deserted
