Skiadaki is a very small amazing beach formed at the exit of the wild canyon Kakoperatos, which is located 66km south of Heraklion and 10km south of Achendrias village, on the eastern side of Asterousia Mountains. The beach, which is in one of the most isolated on the island, has beautiful pebbles and is surrounded by steep rocks.
The beach is mainly accessed by boat, but you could also trek about an hour west of Agios Nikitas monastery and crossing two small gorges at Petrigiari area (of course, boat is the easiest way). The surrounding area is ideal for fishing. Moreover, if you come by boat, do not forget to walk in the gorge and admire the rugged landscape, till the dead end with falls that get dry in summer.
The name Skiadaki means small shade, taken after the shady dark bottom of the gorge caused by the tall cliffs. Indeed, if you come here you don’t need an umbrella and you will find shade throughout the day.
