The fortified islet of Spinalonga is one of the most famous attractions in Greece. Several small ferries transfer visitors from Elounda and Plaka. The visitors can wander on the island that the Venetians fortified to keep their saltpans in Elounda safe from their enemies. The island later was inhabited by the Ottomans and afterwards housed a leper colony till mid-20th century.
This history Is well known to most of us, but what is really unknown is that there is a beautiful beach to enjoy a cooling bath, on the southwest part of the island. The visitor can relax below the several tamarisk trees on the beach and swim with the amazing backdrop of the fortress and the views to the opposite peninsula of Kolokitha.
Although the opposite coast is located in very short distance, it’s not a good idea to swim there, as sea current is very strong and there are many ferries passing every now and then.
