Adjacent and parallel to the current highway linking Heraklion to Messara plane, between the villages Prinias and Avgeniki, a beautiful canyon is formed. Its descent requires the use of canyoning equipment, as it forms some steep descents.
This route runs through a well designated path that starts from wood Chamoprina near Malia. Initially we climb a steep slope with unique views to the north coast. The trails leads to the beautiful forest of Azilakes (i.e. holm oaks). There is another road reaching Azilakodasos from Krassi.
This part of the E4 trail is quite easy and offers some nice views to the fertile valleys and vineyards of Heraklion prefecture. The route starts from Ano Asites and firstly meets the cavernous church of Saint Anthony and finishes at Prifitis Ilias. Note that there are long parts along roads, thus you could split the route into smaller parts and overcome some with a car or bike.
The course starts from the beautiful beach of Tripiti formed at the exit of the the gorge of Agios Savas and at the end of the dirt tracks starting from Vasiliki and Lendas. It runs along the wild coastline and ends at the secluded beach Katarti after about 1:10.
This part of the E4 is one of the easiest you can find in Crete as it is entirely through paved and dirt roads (in fair condition). As it is quite long, you can explore it by car, but we suggest thinking of cycling. The route offers good views to the olive groves of Pediada province.
Cretans used to eat more sheep and goat meat than beef or pork. Small-scale livestock farming and the particular relief of the island called for flocks of smaller animals, usually grazing in mountain pastures. Traditional livestock farming would be nothing special if it weren't for the abundance and nutritional value of the indigenous herbs on which the flocks feed. That's what makes their milk and meat so tasty, and their owners so proud.
