The canyon of Panagia (Virgin Mary), also known as Kalami I, is parallel to the gorge Xerofarago (or Kalami II) and takes its name after the former monastery of Panagia Keralimeniotissa located at its exit. It is a technical gorge, meaning that there are steep descents, and crossing it requires technical canyoning equipment. This is about 600 meters long, with six rappels, the highest of which is about 15 meters. It has plenty of vegetation, and special beauty, and the riverbed has water till spring. It is bolted by the speleological clubs of Crete and the crossing by a small canyoning group takes about 1:30 hours.
If you have two cars and want to leave them at the exit and at the entrance of the gorge, the distance between the two parking sites is about 2.5 km (10 minutes). Alternatively, you can reach the entrance by hiking aside the gorge walls for about 20-25 minutes.
