Kambos Gorge

On the way to Elafonissi beach from the road running along the west coast of Crete, there is the beautiful village of Kambos belonging to Kissamos province. From there a short dirt road heads to the west and leads to the lush canyon of Kambos, being the westernmost gorge of Crete. The gorge gathers water from the small massif of Koutroulis.

Along the canyon there is a beautiful trekking path running below the shadow of huge plane trees, next to the river bed which’s first part has water all year round. The walls have impressive formations for half an hour, till we reach a water spring. There we meet again the road that descends from the village to the cavernous church of Agia Ekaterini and Agia Marina, a few meters later. Trekking along the riverbed is some years hard, due to dense vegetation and water.

From Agia Kyriaki we walk along the riverbed that soon reaches the secluded, but beautiful pebbly beach of Platanakia where plane trees reach the sea.
